Community Services
Thrift
Shop
- The Thrift Shop is open Monday through
Thursday from 8:30 a.m.to 5:00 p.m. Good clean
used or new clothing is accepted and is sold from $.25 to $3 to the
public. Clothing is given to families in need. This is done on a
determination basis of need, income, burnout, etc.
Adult Basic Education
- Catawba Valley Community College manages this
program. The program is taught every Thursday morning (9:00 to 12 noon)
throughout the year. Classes are held in the
ECCCM conference rooom. Certified Teachers instruct this class. If you are
interested in getting your GED contact CVCC in Hickory at (828) 327-7000.
How to Apply for Assistance
- To apply for help, you must be a resident of Catawba
County & live in the service area of ECCCM; provide photo ID; a Social
Security Card or Green Card must be provided for everyone in the household
(or a document to verify your Social Security or Green Card Number);
documents showing the family's monthly income and all monthly expenses, bring
a document with you that has your current name and address (i.e. utility
bill, lease agreement, etc. ).
- We have also
developed some simple forms that help us determine eligibility and will
help you better understand your financial status. We encourage you to
print these forms and complete them. Click on the forms to download them
to your PC.

Expense Planning
Hunger Prevention Program (Emergency Food)
- Applications are accepted daily at the ECCCM
center. These applications are based on income (as well as need) and
follows poverty guidelines.
USDA Food
Commodities
-
A Federally sponsored food program previously handled by
Dept. of Social Services. Food from Second Harvest Food Bank is
received monthly and is distributed quarterly to those who qualify.
Applications are accepted daily
at ECCCM center.
Eligibility for this food is based on Federal Income
Guidelines and the number in family.
Crisis Services
- Emergency assistance food pantry, Crisis monetary
assistance (by voucher only) and help for burnouts Monday through
Thursday. Applications are accepted Monday through Thursday for
help toward utilities, oil/kerosene/ pharmaceutical needs, rent, etc. 8:30
– 4:30 p.m.
