ECCCM has a rich history of serving others in the name of Christ. Matthew 25:31-40 was, and continues to be, foundational during the visioning and administering of ECCCM’s ministries: “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me… Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me” (Matt 25:35–37, 40).
Today ECCCM continues to serve those who are in crisis. Whether due to unemployment, underemployment, sudden personal crisis, or other extenuating circumstances, ECCCM is a source of refuge in the storms of life. Our philosophy is simple: To provide a hand up, not a hand out, to those in need.
ECCCM has a serious responsibility to the community as we serve the large geographical area of eastern Catawba County including: Newton, Conover, Maiden, Claremont, Catawba, Sherrills Ford, Terrell, Blackburn, and all areas in between. Providing assistance with mortgage and rent payments, utility bills, food, pharmaceuticals, clothing, and fuel oil & kerosene, ECCCM harnesses the collective support of our community – its churches, businesses, foundations, and residents – then leverages that support through partnerships with suppliers that allows for the purchase of goods at price points well below the retail average. Remaining good stewards of our resources, we continue to hold administrative costs in the single digits, meaning that over 90 cents of every dollar goes directly to crisis relief.
Continuing to be led by a clergy person and a strong Board of Directors, our name underscores our ideology: a Cooperative Christian Ministry. In cooperation with our community, we are intentionally Christian, being the body of Christ that ministers to the world. Daily the staff prays for our ministry, our supportive community, the clients we will serve that day, thanking God for the opportunity to extend divine love and grace.
Thank you for your continued support of our ministries, ministries that would not occur without you. At ECCCM, our ministry is in partnership with everyone who partners with us as we remain a beacon of light in our community.
Rev. Robert C. Silber, Executive Director
Eastern Catawba Cooperative Christian Ministry, Inc.
It's no secret that these are hard times for Catawba County residents.
But what some people may not know is that these are also hard times for the organizations who serve the county's needy residents.
Crisis services at Eastern Catawba Cooperative Christian Ministries increased about 40 percent from this time last year, according to the Rev. Robert Silber, ECCCM executive director. The ministry provided 317 services Monday, which increased from 232 during the same time last year.
In fact, ECCCM closed its doors at 11 a.m. Tuesday and stopped taking service applications because of residents' overwhelming requests for crisis help, like paying their power bills, feeding their families and paying their mortgages.
"We're seeing a lot of hardworking folks who just can't catch a break," Silber said.
