ECCCM Building Campaign
ECCCM
formally opened its new facility on Jan. 15, 2006, the culmination of the
first-ever capital campaign for the ministry. The “Building for the Future”
capital campaign initiated in 2003 raised over $1 million to fund the
facility and ongoing ministry. The one-story brick building more than
tripled the former facility to enable the ministry to better serve the
community.
The Catawba County commissioners provided three acres
of land to erect the facility near the County Agricultural Center in south
Newton. Working in cooperation with city and county planners, and Matthew’s
Construction Company a local building contractor provided architectural
drawings, the civil engineering plans were completed for 9,400 square feet
of space on one level allowing easy access for clients, staff and
volunteers.
Improvements include a covered drive-up door and
loading dock to allow easy movement of food shipments and other items to and
from the warehouse. The new building houses an expanded thrift store,
private interview rooms, enlarged parking lot and expanded food storage and
sorting areas including a new walk-in cooler and freezer.
A $200,000 challenge gift from the E. Rhodes and Leona
B. Carpenter Foundation set the pace for the successful fund drive which
encompassed the business community, foundations, individuals and over 80
supportive congregations. Major donors also included the Bolick Family
Foundation, Concordia Lutheran Church, GDS, O. Leonard Moretz Foundation,
Wachovia Foundation and Jim and Peggy Templeton.
W. Stine Isenhower was honorary chairman of the
campaign, with Jim Templeton and Jerome Bolick serving as co-chairmen.
Campaign chairs were Lynn Lail and Al Gaither, Leadership Gifts Division;
Jim Perry, Major Gifts Division; Joyce Spencer and Ann Marie Blackmon,
Operations; Steve Garland and Tammy Wilson, Communications; Tom Dixon,
Community Gifts Division; Robert A. Mullinax, Planned Giving; and Charlie Bunn, Primary Gifts Division; & Michael A. Sherrill,
Audit. Wheeler and Associates of Blowing Rock served as campaign counsel.
